12-LittleStoneMen * Stone Men. These were quite likely built by children, but we wondered how they got down there. The banks are quite steep.... * 938 x 794 * (131KB)
13-Waterfall * Waterfall on the opposite wall. Günther told us that after very heavy rainfall, stones that would be transported by this stream, would jump down in three or two steps, and would probably hit the other side of the river - where we were standing... * 930 x 1743 * (369KB)
14-TurkishLily * Turkish Lily - heavily protected because seldom. But at some places, there were quite a lot of plants. * 960 x 1280 * (135KB)

The weather did indeed improve, so we did take our first guided tour: through the AlmbachKlamm, up to a well, and back to the parking place via Ettelberg. An easy walk to begin with. The guide, named Günther, told us the recent history: in 1992, extremely heavy rainfall in just two hours started landslides up the Almbach valley, and this washed down in wild, wild waters. On this side of the mountain, a barraged lake was completely filled with debris and stones, which caused the still wildly streaming waters overflow the lake, and all debris and stones were washed downriver - destroying bridges and passages. The debris and stones were left in the riverbed - which is now several meters higher than before. On the other side of the ridge, someone came home and saw his neighbour clearing the lower levels of his house, He parked his car to help him, and when they were finished, the car was gone. A few days later, the remains of five cars were discovered near Salzburg - you couldn't tell what brand they have been.... A lot of damage was done to houses by wild waters carrying a lot of stones and debris on this side as well. Somewhat further away, a house was completely destroyed. Still, a nice walk over bridges and passages that were restored after this disaster. Franka had to cross grids - very easily: calm as if she hadn't done anything else. Also slight stairs were no problem for her. The second part - along what used to be the lake, now filled up with stones and dangerous to walk on because the surface may collapse due to hollow areas below - and over the Ettelberg back to the parking place. The weather got better during the day and when we got back, it was sunny and warm, at some spots hot air blew uphill in our faces.
