Another famous inhabitant of Corfu city was 'Sissi' - queen Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary. She had a little palace built where she stayed when she visited Greece. She was taken by the Greek Hero Achillles - there is still a statue where he's dying, after being shot in the only place where he was vulnerable. Later, the German emperor Wilhelm bought the palace. He as well was a fan of Achilles - but as a hero; at the end of the garden there is a huge statue of the soldier - a landmark for the captain of his yacht when sailing to the island. We went there by bus, and walked back; it lead us over a dam that in the path of incoming airplanes. At the end, there is an old monastery hat we visited; and on our way back - when it started to drizzle again - we passed an archeological site but it was closed so we couldn't visit it. |
