Power failure
Between 12:41 (the last entry in the operator log) and 13:10 (the estimated next hourly timestamp, the last has been 12:10) power failed for about one hour. I only found out at 18:30 when I restarted Diana – as usual, the disks restore far too late so boot failes. Reset isn’t enough to get the machine running, power has to be cylced, but the system came up without a problem; the only thing still to be automated is setting a logical to show the site frontpage :). That was done much later.

Labour Day
Means work to be done 🙂

Mail stats for April:
Total messages    : 4645 = 100.0 o/o
DNS Blacklisted   : 1951 =  42.0 o/o (Files: 30)
Relay attempts    : 1495 =  32.1 o/o (Files: 30)
Processed by PMAS : 1199 =  25.8 o/o (Files: 30)
       Discarded :  175 =  14.5 o/o (processed),   3.7 o/o (all)
    Quarantained :  368 =  30.6 o/o (processed),   7.9 o/o (all)
       Delivered :  656 =  54.7 o/o (processed),  14.1 o/o (all)

The huge number of relay attemps is mainly one day: 17-Apr, between 08:08 and 08:50, one (!) server at address 182.3.217.97 has tried to send a massive 1139 mails over Diana- sending to “bogus” users at my ISP, resulting in that number of messages in the logfile – growing to over 270 blocks, where the size is usually, 1, seldom more than 4.
Given the sender name (@sina.com) I guess the origin of the attemps is China.
A second users – clearly Chinese: the sender has a .cn domain, but from address 222.247.120.28 – tried the same attempt for 262 times. Failed, of course 🙂

Three “users” have subscribed to the VMS wiki but nothing has been changed so far, but the accounts will be scrutenized

Of course, logs have been archived, as usual, aftre being checked. Nothing specific.

New software for the albums
A few weeks back, I read about Hugin in a Linux magazine – a suite to create panoramic images from adjacent photographs. I used to to that manually – with different results – but this seemed to do the job far much nicer. So I downloaded the sources into my Ubuntu environment, a packages seemed not to exists. It required specific software to build, and I got that – only to find the version was tool old, Hugin needed a newer version than was available…
later, I found that a Windows packages – completely build – was available. Not the latest one, but worth a try. Found it works fine, you’ve get to get aqainted with the terminogoly and methods, but in it’s basic settings, it does the job. So all ‘combined’ images in the Trips, Tracks and Travels blog from now on will be created with that software.
