Changed mapping
In order to update the blog software (really needed….) I did some testing on Daphne – it required a change in mapping. Here I set up a WordPress 3.5.1 environment using PHP 5.3 (by Mark Berryman), and with some help of the WASD mailing list (and Mark Daniel in particular) I got it working.
Now I tested this setup in Diana aside the one that has been used for some years now, taking into the account the way the environment has been defined here – and it works as well – it looks a bit faster as well. So I disabled the old mapping and started using the new one, starting with this blog – and I finished this post using that new setting. Trips, Tracks and Travels done next, so both have been changed now. Still run into the CRTL-issue at times, though. There is little that can be done here.
Now it’s time to update the blogs themselves. WordPress recommends up to 2 levels at a time, so that would mean 5 steps in total (2.6.5 –> 2.8 –> 3.0 –> 3.2 –> 3.4 –> 3.5.1), and intermediate database backups in between. Or try in one step (2.6.5 –> 3.5.1) which may require a full database restore in case things go wrong….
Or something in between (2.6.5 –> 3.0 –> 3.5.1)….

Indeed: broken
I just received confirmation of the supplier that the Vigor router is indeed broken ‘beyond repair’. This type is no longer available in the normal channels, so they will contact Draytek for repair or a replacement. It may take some time… Luckily, I already contacted Draytek on the issue, perhaps I can speed things up….

But the downside is that if I receive a replacement, I might have to redo the configuration from scratch. Since the backup of Draytek is both binary and encrypted, I cannot read these files unless there is software to read these filoes. There is some on the internet, but it also contains the warning that not all information can be read – because the file is binary…Another question to Draytek!

Nothing weird, it seems
in the monthly maintenance job.

But digging deeper, there is more to tell.
Since I have exchanged the Vigor router – that has been set up to deny access to the systems to single machines, or complete networks, the amount of spam messages, bogus accesses and FTP attempts on non-existing accounts has increased. This cannot be blocked by the ISP’s Fritzbox.. Also, I have no data on accesses since the router doesn’t log on external systems. Another annoying thing is that it’s actually impossible to access the router form maintenance – even when it has been setup. VPN’s are possible but it doesn’t work either 🙁
Hopefully the Vigor can be repaared (and Draytek finds a way to get the configuration complete) si I can re-install it.
