The software used

The photographs have been taken with a small Olympus camera (Camedia C-720 UltraZoom, 3.0 Megapixel) and since March 2010, a Nikon D3000 with a standard 18-55 lens - The Olypus was damaged beyond repair, and apart over three times the amount of pixels, the Nikon has a load of advantages…

In April 2010, I discovered Hugin for creating wide-view images by joining several single pictures - and downloaded the latest build for Windows - not the latest one, but it does what it is said to do: Stitch images together - seamlessly.

Having prepared the images, the albums are created using JalbumPhoto gallery

Map data is retrieved from the GPS using Garmin’s MapSource program. I have purchased the Dutch Topo maps for walks in the Netherlands and Ordnance Survey maps for Great Britain, and use the standard MapSource European basemap as a background for the rest. What is shown in the albums is a a screen capture from the Mapsource window.

The maps are quite expensive - as any good map.

Garmin’s native format can only be used on Garmin GPS equipment.

To accomodate any other one, the tracks are exported in two formats that can be used with other units, but there may be a requirement for preparation:
CSV - Comma Separated Values, and GPX (Geographical Position eXchange.
Programs you can use to load either format into your GPS are the freeware program EASYGPS and it’s bigger brother ExpertGPS ($ 60 for a single-system license)

The latest version of ExpertGPS has the ability to map a track on GoogleEarth - a program worth installing as well.
