San Piero has a railway connection to Florence, and we used that in stead of the bus transfer from the camping site. First, we couldn't find the station but when we did, it occurred that we just missed the train and had to wait for one hour to catch the next one. After a 30 minute ride, we started our exploration of Florence at the Duomo - we climed the double dome, going up the two shells that Brunelleschi had designed, probably by the same stairs and route taht the builders once used. But before that, we had a nice view on the inside. Once up the dome, the views over Florence are magnificent. Next, we went to the Palazzo Vecchio and the Loggia di Signori, and from there, through the open corridor of the Uffize, to the Ponte Vecchio, following the covered alley that Casimo De'Medici had built between Palazzo Piiti and Palazzo Vecchio - the one his home, the second his office. At Palazzo Pitti, we visisted the Giardion di Bolboli - a typical Italian garden, with hedges, avenues, fountains amd atrtwork. Two ancient gardens had been setup: a real Roman one, and a worker's one as found in Pompei. We alos visited the Meneum of Porcelain and a Custume museum - because these were on the same ticket. On our return, we had different views on the Ponte Vecchio on our way back to the station. It had been a long, hot day.... |
