Italy 2009
Getting passed Florence from North to South proved troublesome; even on the car's navigation unit, it took a long time to get on the route to Siena, to visit the Etruscan towns Volterra and Gimignano. Volterra was chosen for the lanscape feature near this town: a location where the hill on which it is build, is slowly falling apart causing landslides and high cliffs - apart from the features still present from it's past: Narrow streets within walls, high above the surrounding lands. We made a short walk in the surrounding area - but couldn't find the nature reserve we were looking for. Gimignano is famous for it's towers. Again, this is a small town with Etrusken, even Umbrian roots, but most famous for its towers, marking the owners wealth: Building a tower - and maintaining it - means you had money; the more you owned, the higher your tower could be. We made a somewhat longer walk around the city, and the towers were always in sight. A kind of Manhattan in Tuscany. On our way beack, we choose to drive along smaller roads and avoid the highway. It means much more time was needed - we arrived after dark.
