On the map we hired from the camping site, we found another walk that started near the camping site. Going the opposite direction compared to our walk to Calenzano, this would lead into a different landscape. And so it did: the area is rather flat, not as rocky as the road to Calenzano; it lead us through an agricuktural landscape, over fields and forest roads. On the map, a chapel was marked at Bosco ai Frati. When we arrived there, it turned out it had been a Fransiscan Monastry until three years ago, when the last monk has passed away. Since then, other followers of Fransiscus form a community here. We had a tour lead by brother Berhard who spoke German (I guess he actually is Gerrman) abd we learned a bit on the history of the premisis. Their biggest trasure is a wooden crucifix by Donatello. Following our way, we missed our turn and went on far off route, before we returned and found the right track - clearly we missed it, it said it was private property and we were not supposed to pass. But we had to and did - and got down to the stream, flanked by a row of trees; this lead is back to San Piero - where we had our best icecream of the whole trip, in a very small icecream shop. |
