We left La Fresqière because the weather turned for the worst: Cold and rainy, not the nicest type of weather you would expect in Southern France this time of year, and not really the type to make walks in the mountains. We headed up to Houffalize in Belgium, in the lower parts of the Ardennes. On our route we passed Briancon - a nice town with a medieval centre and citadel.

-Mountains * The wild landscape North of Barcelonette. Take a good look - you may find the entrance of a tunnel, once used for trains. * 3072 x 2304 * (1.32MB)
-OldFactory * An old factory building in Briancon, destined to be used as an aerospace and astronomical museum - according the flags that hang from the top windows. * 1984 x 1488 * (509KB)
-Isere * The river Isere - here just a wild stream - wilder than normal in this time of year, due to heavy rainfall the few days before. * 1488 x 1984 * (583KB)
-SideWall * The same factory building seen from aside. Major works need to be done before a museum could be opened here. * 1923 x 1413 * (361KB)
-ElevatedWaterway * The pond and elevated road (previous railway?) along it, looking out to the old town on top of the rocks * 3270 x 1360 * (522KB)

-ToTheOldCity * Getting to the old city, we dwelt along narrow roads * 1488 x 1984 * (561KB)
-ToTheOldCity * and finally we found the road heading up, and up, and up... * 1488 x 1984 * (498KB)
-BeingWatched * being watched from above * 744 x 992 * (92KB)
-OuterGate * Finally we got to the first gate. The sign above commemorates a siege of Briancon in 1642, where they kept the town for three months - without a garrison in town... * 1434 x 1554 * (258KB)
-OldCityWalls * From this lower pace, you have a clear look on the houses near the town walls * 1984 x 1488 * (499KB)

-UptoTown * Heading for the main gate on this side leading to yet another place, much smaller, in front of yet another gate. * 1984 x 1488 * (537KB)
-Restorations * On this walk you have a open view to the walls above, that are in the process of repair * 1984 x 1488 * (575KB)
-DefensiveWalls * On the other side, it's clear why the people of Briancon were able to withstand the siege * 1984 x 1488 * (503KB)
-PrteDeLEmbrun * Port de L'Embrun - the gate on this side of the town. Embrun is the nearest town South of Briancon and this road leads to it - hence the name. * 1984 x 1281 * (318KB)
-WatchOut * A watchtower on the edge in the wall. * 1984 x 1488 * (317KB)

-OnTheWall * The way along the falling edge of the wall. The ridge on the left is less than a meter high. Such a path runs along all walls - and where needed, doorways cross square-paces walls. * 1488 x 1984 * (563KB)
-UpHill * Within the walls, all roads go up. Steep... * 1488 x 1984 * (372KB)
-WaterRunningDown * In the middle, a gutter prevents down-running water to spread all over the street. In earlier days, it might have been the sewer as well. * 2304 x 3072 * (1.32MB)
-Sideways * A way straight aside - going even more uphill, just over a meter wide: enough to walk. * 1488 x 1984 * (453KB)
-NearPlace * A turn in the street and a wide opening on the right: an open space is ahead. * 2304 x 3072 * (662KB)
