Setting up DHCP part 2

Once it was figured out that the configuration required a certain order, it was quite simple.

Probably, you could do otherwise than I did but as is it is now, it works - to begin with.

Any tab - subnet, node or group, starts with an entry "New record', you must add a line to get the thing going. One thing you simply need before you can setup a subnet, it requires a 'group' te be defined. That's where I started:

and I added 'Intranet' - since that requires the DHCP server. What you define here, will be the defaults for all subnets and nodes that belong to this group. So it allows you to define several groups, subnets etcetera - if you have a multihomed server, this can be handy.

Now these are the defaults for the group "Intranet":

One thing to do - and it's quite easy to forget: HIT THE "UPDATE" button. Otherwise, you'll find data lost...It happened quite some times!

Don't fill in "GROUP MEMBERS" - it's automatic updated when the subnet is created and defined to belong to this group.

Next, define the subnet. Again, the tab states with "new record" so you simply need to add one:

So added 'intra' as subgroup and added this to group "Intranet"

To fill in "Intranet" - it's a search list where you can choose - if you have more than one.

In fact, that's the only thing to do! All the rest comes from the group the subnet belongs to.

Save the whole bunch, start DHCP server.

Each PC now added to the network, where DHCP is defined in it's TCPIP-settings, will now get it's data. But it's NOT in DNS, yet. The log files shows an error that the DNS updates fail. No wonder since that requires some additions within the DNS configuration: which machines are allowed to update? That must be added to BIND.CONF. After that was added, theer still was a problem: The file .DDNSKEYS needs to be updated as well, it should contain the DNS-lines to be added:

Restart both DHCP and DNS and foind out DNS won't start due to the journal file, as mentiond in DHCP-setup.....One that's setteled, there is no problem.

DHCP now works (and I've some clue how the configuration can be done without GUI).
