First system updated to VSI-VMS
End of this year, my HPE-VMS licenses expire, so it’s time to update to the VSI Community licenses: which requires installation of VSI-VMS. It also means – as I found out earlier – that I have to re-configure a few things: Cluster and TCPIP.
First things first: I also was invited to participate in testing VMS on X64, currently in version 9.1A, which requires cross-compilation on Itanium so there is some urgency to get on to VSI-VMS as well.
So today (well, tonight) I started to update the smaller Itanium (1 4-core CPU and 8 Gb of memory, and one 73 Gb disk). But there was a catch: the DVD I created was crashed even before VMS was fully loaded. As it turned out it was either corrupted, or even the wrong version: I downloaded the right one from the VSI Community server, burned it onto DVD using Nero and the BlueRay device, because Nero had a problem with the DVD writer. But that DVD could not be read by the Itanium, so I created another one, on the DVD writer using Windows. that one was found redable – so the update from HPE to VSI-VMS started. Slow, but steady: by the time this post was written the update was at about 75%…

Tomorrow, I’ll see what I still need to do: At least: load the VSI licenses, and configure cluster and TCPIP, and install the layered products. Next, the X64 cross compilers: but for that, I’ll first have a look on what to download, install and configure.
